What is it?
Have you ever taken the time to reflect on your creative journey? Taking a moment to review your artwork, evaluate your learning and appreciate your growth is one of the most profound steps you can take as a creative being.
Using the concept of a fine art portfolio but adapting it for a tangling practice, the Portfolio Builder Series creates a space for you to unlock your potential and allow your own creativity to flourish.
During the series, you will build a diverse portfolio of Zentangle artwork, from simple designs to complex compositions, each with its own purpose, yet still building upon each lesson.
Learn how to combine patterns, play with shading and highlights, and develop your own unique creative eye. By the end of the course, you'll have a beautifully curated portfolio that showcases your own artistic journey and growth.
What will you learn?
You will learn what an art portfolio is, what makes it successful and why it’s so important to have one, even if you aren’t creating art for profit.
Within each class you will learn a variety of skills related to topics such as: fundamental pen strokes, shading, composition, style and more. These skills build upon each other with every project and can be adapted easily to your own tangling journey outside of the class.
In addition to creating art, you will learn how to critique your own work beyond judging it in comparison to a teacher or to other artists. When you can cultivate an artist's eye and use that skill to review your own work, your creative abilities will soar!
Who is a good fit for this series?
The Portfolio Builder Series is approachable for all levels of experience and goals.
If you aspire to expand your tangling into magazine/gallery/blog submissions, having an art portfolio is critical to showing your range of skills and personality as an artist.
If you aspire to teach creativity in any form, knowing how to navigate the ebb and flow of creative learning will help you guide your students toward success.
If you are a hobbyist who just wants to advance your own skill level, learning how to use an artist’s eye for evaluating and learning your craft will provide you the perspective of growth, self-awareness and accomplishment.
No matter where you are on the spectrum of creativity, creating an art portfolio will provide you a history from which you can build and grow.
What supplies do I need?
If you want the ease of having everything you need for this course, you can purchase an optional supply kit which includes:
- 10x10 grey journal (70 pages)
- 9 – 8x8 substrates
- Staedtler Pigment fine liner set of 6 pens
- Blackwing Matte pencil
- Generals White chalk pencil (full size)
- Paper stump & a tortillon
- 3 clear, self-adhesive 6x6 pockets (for notes/comments)
- Photo corners
- Graphitint pencil(s)
- Colored pencil(s)
You are welcome, however, to gather your own supplies and adapt the classes to whatever you choose.

All classes are recorded and available for a year minimum.
You will also receive a bonus class on how to create your own style of art without needing to follow a leader. (Wed, July, 23, 6-9pm)
